Lívia Rév Chopin Nocturne in E flat major Op 9 No 2
Lívia Rév Nocturne for piano Nocturne in E flat major Op 9 No 2 Livia Rév, who was born in Hungary, started her musical education with Margit Varro. It was evident from a very early age that she was exceptionally talented as she won the Grand Prix des Enfants Prodiges when she was nine. She made her debut with orchestra when she was twelve performing the Mozart E flat Concerto for two pianos. In later years she studied with Leo Weiner and Szekely at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, with Professor Robert Teichmuller at the Leipzig Conservatory, and with Paul Weingarten of the Vienna Conservatory. She also won the Grand Prix de l'Academie Franz Liszt. Sir Malcolm Sargent first brought her to the notice of the British public after a successful orchestral concert. Since that time she has been a regular visitor to the United Kingdom, and has played more or less everywhere both in recital and with orchestra. Madame Rév plays regularly all over Europe and has been the soloist with such conductors as Sir Adrian Boult, André Cluytens, Jascha Horenstein, Eugen Jochum, Josef Krips, Rafael Kubelik, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Konstantin Silvestri and Waltert Susskind. In 1963 she was invited to make her debut in the United States by the Rockefeller Institute. Subsequently she made her New York debut with a recital at the Town Hall which was oustandingly successful. For some years now Madame Rév has made her home in Paris. Clementi Sonata B flat Op 24 Allegro con Brio Horowitz Rec1950
Horowitz was a great exponent of the Clementi Sonatas and there is an amusing story (Harvey Sachs, Rubinstein , A Life page 353) peripherally regarding them. A few days before a certain concert was to be performed on February 3, 1975, Daniel Barenboim, (pianist and at that time, conductor of the New York Philharmonic) received a message from Horowitz that he needed to see him. Barenboim had no idea as to what Horowitz wanted. Barenboim arrived at the appointed time and was received by a very "formal " Horowitz. (Horowitz opened the door), They sat down and talked about many things including Horowitz' Berlin days.. Barenboim recalled, He told a lot of stories—very one sided, Im sure, but it was still a lot of fun. Then Horowitz said, Tell me, you know Clementi Sonatas? Not really. Barenboim replied.. Horowitz then played several of the sonatas pointing out various fascinating figurations. None the less, Barenboim still wondered why Horowitz had requested the meeting. Barenboim realized that several hours had passed, and since he had to attend a rehearsal the next day, he informed Horowitz that as much as he had enjoyed the evening, perhaps he should take his leave. Horowitz replied, No, no, no. Stay. We're having a nice time and Wanda is not here: shes playing cards. (Then) in a sort of forced, intimate tone of voice, he said, Tell me, I read in newspapers that you are conducting with Rubinstein, with Phyilharnonyic. What he plays? I said, he's playing Beethoven G Major ...

Schumann: Quartet A minor, op 41 #1 (entire) - Flonzaley String Quartet
1. Andante Espressivo: Allegro 2. Scherzo (Presto - Intermezzo) 3. Adagio 4. Presto The Flonzaley StringQuartet was the deliberate creation of Éduard J. de Coppet of New York, who in 1902 engaged the original members to devote themselves entirely to quartet-playing, and not with any view to giving regular concerts in public. The group took its name from de Coppet's summer villa near Lausanne, in Switzerland, where the four musicians first rehearsed. After a long period of practice, the Quartet made a European tour and won high praise for the perfection of its ensemble and its artistic finish. Both violinists and the violist had been students of the Belgian maestro César Thomson. The group was first heard in New York, in private and at charity concerts, in autumn 1904, but it did not give a public concert in the USA until 5 December 1905. After that it appeared regularly in Europe and America. The members stuck to the original principle of not accepting any outside engagement, and having no pupils, and by devoting themselves entirely to the quartet maintained a position of acknowledged superiority in their field. They disbanded in 1928. Robert Alexander Schumann (1810-1856) Schumann's father was a bookseller who encouraged Robert's musical and literary talents. Robert started studying piano at age 10. In 1828, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig as a law student, although he found music, philosophy, and Leipzig's taverns more interesting than the law. He also began ...

JS Bach - Cantata "Es Ist Das Heil Uns Kommen Her" BWV 9 (1/2)
Cantata on Chorale Sixth Sunday after Trinity. Poet unknown. 1. Es Ist Das Heil Uns Kommen Her 2. Gott gab uns ein Gesetz at 4:44 3. Wir waren schon zu tief gesunken at 5:53 4. Doch mußte das Gesetz erfüllet werden at 9:22 Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra Ton Koopman, Director 1. Chorus (S, A, T, B) Now is to us salvation come By grace and purest favor. Our works, they help us not at all, They offer no protection. But faith shall Jesus Christ behold, Who hath enough done for us all He is our intercessor. 2. Recit. (B) God gave to us a law, but we were far too weak That we could ever hope to keep it. We followed but the call of sin, No man could be called godly; The soul remained to flesh adherent And ventured not to stand against it. We were within the law to walk And there as if within a mirror see How yet our nature was undisciplined; And just the same we clung to it. Of his own strength none had the power His sinful rudeness to abandon, E'en though he all his strength might strive to gather. 3. Aria (T) We were ere then too deeply fallen, The chasm sucked us fully down, The deep then threatened us with death, And even still in such distress There was no hand to lend us help. 4. Recit. (B) But somehow was the law to have fulfillment; And for this came to earth salvation, The Highest's Son hath it himself fulfilled And his own Father's wrath made still. Through his own guiltless dying He let us win salvation. Who now in him doth trust And on his passion build, He walketh not ...

Withrecitals for europa and suramerica specially. He won first prize in several young piano competitions. He is Piano Teacher in Madrid and continue to give concerts. Michel Mañanes has obtained, recently, the University Title of "Expert in Pianistic Interpretation", gotten with "Cum Laudae" by unanimous vote (International University of Andalusia) Chopin composed his popular Nocturne in E flat major, Op. 9, No. 2 when he was about twenty. Like much of Chopin's music, this nocturne is tinged with melancholy. This popular nocturne is in rounded binary form (A, A, B, A, B, A) with coda, C. The A and B sections become increasingly ornamented with each recurrence. The penultimate bar utilizes considerable rhythmic freedom, indicated by the instruction, senza tempo (without tempo). Nocturne in E Flat Major opens with a legato melody containing graceful upward leaps which becomes increasingly wide as the line unfolds. This melody is heard again three times during the piece. With each repetition, it is varied by ever more elaborate decorative tones and trills. The nocturne also includes a subordinate melody, which is played with rubato. A sonorous foundation for the melodic line is provided by the widely spaced notes in the accompaniment, connected by the damper pedal. The waltz like accompaniment gently emphasizes the 12/8 ...

Rakhmaninov, 1 April 1873 [OS 20 March]--28 March 1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. He was one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, the last great representative of Russian late Romanticism in classical music. Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and other Russian composers gave way to a thoroughly personal idiom which included a pronounced lyricism, expressive breadth, structural ingenuity and a tonal palette of rich, distinctive orchestral colors.[1] Understandably, the piano figures prominently in Rachmaninoff's compositional output, either as a solo instrument or as part of an ensemble. He made it a point, however, to use his own skills as a performer to explore fully the expressive possibilities of the instrument. Even in his earliest works, he revealed a sure grasp of idiomatic piano writing and a striking gift for melody. In some of his early orchestral pieces he showed the first signs of a talent for tone painting, which he would perfect in The Isle of the Dead,[2] and he ...

Tatiana Troyanos with Justino Diaz, interview at Casals Festival 1985 (interview in English) 1 of 2 Special thanks to fairlytaleofnewyork for her help. Tatiana Troyanos - Biography US mezzo-soprano Tatiana Troyanos (Sept. 12, 1938, New York - Aug. 21, 1993, New York), was renowned for her dark, warm, emotional voice; also a skilled actress, she had a wide repertoire, much of which she recorded. Troyanos first studied piano before an interest in singing developed during her teenage years. After high school she studied at the Juilliard School, New York City, and with Hans Heinz. She then sang in summer stock and on Broadway and in 1963 made her debut with the New York City Opera. In the 1965-66 season Troyanos began a 10-year association with the Hamburg (West Germany) State Opera; among the highlights of her years there was creation of the role of Jeanne in the world premiere of Krzysztof Pendereckis The Devils of Loudon (1969). She had earlier gained wide European acclaim, however, as the Composer (one of the trouser roles with which she became identified) in Richard Strausss Ariadne auf Naxos at the 1966 Aix-en-Provence (France) Festival. Troyanos sang the title role in Handels Ariodante at the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, in 1971 and made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1976 as Octavian in Strausss Der Rosenkavalier. Other roles for which she was especially known include Cherubino in Mozarts The Marriage of Figaro, the title role in Bizets Carmen ...

Bolshoi's "Coppélia" w/ Alexandrova: Act III (3/3)
**see clip 1 for general historical notes **Notes on the pas de deux - The Bolshoi has used the costume design of the Tsar Maiden from the Imperial Ballet's production of "The Little Humpbacked Horse" as a costume for Swanilda, which helps to explain her magnificently regal look. It was not until "Coppélia" came to Russia (or perhaps a little earlier) that the piece titled "La Paix" began to serve as an Adage for what is now a Grand pas de deux classique. This may have everything to do with the fact that the role of Franz was originally a travesty role, ie performed by a woman in male garb. **Extra female solo ("Le Travail": Variation for Dionisiia Potapenko, 1904) - This variation is notated as "Le Travail" ("Work"), a female solo celebrating the harvest, & borrowing its title & theme (at least with regard to the costume) from the number in the divertissement. It is set to the music for the male variation from Delibes' ballet "Sylvia", which companies all over the world usually use as an inserted variation for Franz. This solo was arranged by Petipa especially for the ballerina Dionisiia Potapenko in 1904. The old Maestro Petipa mentions attending the performance of "Coppélia" in his diaries, calling her performance "awful", & going on to complain that a review in the local paper said she danced well, which he found "sickening"!! **"Dance of the Bridegroom", supplemental solo for Franz - As men began to take over the travesty role of Franz things began to change in ...

Borodin's "Polovtsian dances" theme from "Prince Igor" on the Mollenhauer Modern Alto recorder
This snippet from "Polovtsian Dances" or "Dance of the Polovtsian Maidens" is perhaps the most well-known theme from the opera "Prince Igor" by Borodin, even finding its way into mainstream culture with its inclusion in a Warren G song. Borodin, for whom composing was a hobby, never got to finish the score for the opera, and it was later completed by among others Rimsky-Korsakov (he of bumblebee fame)
