Ray Lev plays Schubert Sonata in C major D 840 "Reliquie"

completed by Ernst Krenek I. Moderato II. Andante (7:26) III. Menuetto - Allegretto (14:29) IV. Rondo - Allegro (18:09) Franz Schubert\'s Piano Sonata No. 15 in C major, D. 840, nicknamed Reliquie upon its first publication in 1861 in the mistaken belief that it had been Schubert\'s last work, was written in April 1825, whilst the composer was also working on the A minor sonata, D. 845 in tandem. Schubert abandoned the sonata, and only the first two movements of the sonata were fully completed, with the trio section of the third movement also written in full. The minuet section of the third movement is incomplete and contains unusual harmonic changes, which suggests it was there Schubert had become disillusioned and abandoned the movement and later the sonata. The final fourth movement is also incomplete, ending abruptly after 270 bars. The fragments of the sonata survived in Schubert\'s manuscripts, and later the work was collected and published in its incomplete form in 1861. Performances usually present only the two completed movements: 1.Moderato in C major 2.Andante in C minor Ernst Krenek wrote his completion at the request of his friend, the pianist and composer Eduard Erdmann, who wished to add the sonata to his repertoire. Krenek himself dated that request to 1922; other sources date his completion to 1921. Regardless, the work has appeared at least twice in that form on record: once in the aforementioned performance by Ray Lev on a set of 78 RPM disks issued by the ...

Great Expectations: John Mills, Jean Simmons, Alec Guinness, Valerie Hobson (1946 Movie)

DVD: amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Great Expectations is a 1946 British film which won two Academy Awards and was nominated for three others (best picture, best director and best screenplay). It was directed by David Lean, based on the novel by Charles Dickens and stars John Mills, Valerie Hobson, Finlay Currie, Martita Hunt and Alec Guinness. Jean Simmons, who played the role of the young Estella in the film, later played Miss Havisham in a 1989 version directed by Kevin Connor. The script, a slimmed-down version of Dickens\' novel which had been inspired after seeing an abridged stage version of the novel, in which Guinness (responsible for the adaptation) played Herbert Pocket and Martita Hunt was Miss Havisham -- casting that was carried over into the film - was written by Anthony Havelock-Allan, David Lean, Cecil McGivern, Ronald Neame and Kay Walsh. The film was produced by Ronald Neame and photographed by Guy Green.[1] It was the first of two films Lean directed based on Dickens\' novels, the other being his 1948 adaptation of Oliver Twist. Cast * John Mills as Pip as an adult * Jean Simmons as Estella as a girl * Valerie Hobson as Estella as an adult * Martita Hunt as Miss Havisham * Finlay Currie as Abel Magwitch * Francis L. How to find classical music for specific combinations of instruments? Is there a website that allows you to search for pieces of classical chamber music which use specific combinations of instruments? Note that all I need is the name of the piece and the composer. For example, you might type in "oboe, violin, viola, cello" and get "Mozart: Oboe Quartet In F Major, K. 370" as a response. Thanks!

Online source: Mozart - Quartet, K. 370 sheet music

I applaud your notion of accessing the internet for such things, but the search engine does not necessarily guarantee you a perfect fit. You will have to resign yourself to the task of customizing (transcribing) any arrangment that is already out there, especially if your instrument configuration is non-traditional.

GOOD LUCK!If you can find such a website, there is no guarantee that you can get the sheet music or a recording. Unfortunately, there is enormous amounts of classical music that is not very good. We all now that there is enormous amounts of songs on the radio right now that are not very good and will not make the top 40 list. Unfortunately, earlier generations of classical nusicians wrote just as many peices of music that have not stood the test of time. (I know because I had to listen to some when I took music history to get my college degree in music education.

Try this website, it's a bunch of chamber music databases. I haven't tried it myself, but you may have some luck. acmp.net/fcm.shtmlOther than that, try to access the library search engines online of performing arts schools. Some may allow you to search their databases. The Hartt School of Music's Allen Library has a pretty good search engine, you start there.library.hartford.edu/allen/allenhome.htmlAlso give the Library of Congress a try:loc.gov/index.html

Best thing to do is choose a piece that you like, with the number of required parts, and arrange it for your gropu yourself. Unless a piece is written for THAT specific instrumentation, you won't find it, especially if it is not a common arrangement, like a string quartet (violin I, violin II, viola, cello), French saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), horn quartet, clarinet chior, etc....the list goes on.

Aimi Kobayashi plays Chopin Impromptu #1 op.29

UPDATE 2011: Aimi will perform again in Russia this year, in December. She will have the solo recital as well as performance with Vladimir Spivakov playing Chopin Piano Concerto no.1 Aimi had a great succes after her concert in Russia. She played Mozart Piano Concert no.26 with Spivakov and his Virtuoso\'s Orchestra on 24th December 2006, Moscow. The audience gave her a standing ovation and for that she gave an unique performance of Chopin\'s 1st Impromptu.

Baroque work ideas needed for university piano audition!? My program ideas to give you an idea of what Baroque piece would be fitting or that I can play:Classical:Beethoven Sonata Op. 90 in e minorBeethoven Sonata Op. 101 in A Major Romantic:Chopin Impromptu Op. 29 in A-flat Major Chopin Etude Op. 25 No. 6 g-sharp minorI know, very typical but I love these pieces.Only pieces that I have worked on that fall under Baroque works would be Bach's French Suite No. 4 and a few of his sinfonias. Need something fun and new! I have plenty of time to prepare, so any suggestions would be great.

Piano performance repetoire - what do you think? Hello, I've started putting together a repetoire for an end of year performance for a uni music course, I've started learning the first three so far -- so tell me what you think of these choices and of any hints/suggestions for practice or performance etc as i am extremely shy and can get quite nervous before and during a performance!1. Rachmaninoff - Prelude No.1 in C-sharp Minor2. Bach - Partita Op.69 Capricco 3. Chopin - Nocturne in E minor 4. Debussy - The Sunken Cathedral5. Liebermann - Gargoyles op.29 2 or 3. Thanks!
Nice... You'll bring the house down for sure...Just enjoy the music as you play it, and don't worry about the audience...

I am pretty good at the piano, so please don't flame me about getting a teacher, although I know it will benefit me =)Alright, I'll add a bit more about me:Ear training has never been a problem - perfect pitchTechnique - Able to play scales, arpeggios, and etc. fully memorized, no mistakes whatsoeverSight Reading - Able to play Grade 5-6 RCM pieces no problemsMost difficult piece I can PLAY right now: Heroic Polonaise Most difficult piece I can PERFORM is: Chopin Scherzo No. 2

You can download the sheet music from the video: Etude, op.10 No.4 - Chopin

I seriously doubt if you could teach yourself to play it like Horowitz does, but if you have the sheet music, you could try it. There is really no way to answer your questions; some people with 30 years of playing might not be able to play it; others might could learn it after 15 years.

It's impossible to say for sure without hearing you play. Lots of people claim to be "pretty good" some are some aren't, I don't have enough information to judge. This is technically and musically demanding. Could you learn this without a teacher, sure, but it's going to be much more difficult. If you're the kind of person who can take the time to study and analyze the score and take the time to and figure out fingerings on your own then yes. If that doesn't describe you then you need a teacher to help you out.

Ok, first off, ANYTHING can be self taught. It's the quickest way to improve your musicianship and your ear. If you want a challenge, learn it without sheet music. Don't just listen to one version, either, listen to how different performers shape their phrases and notes and try to apply that to your own playing. Learning the notes is easy, it's the fluidity and phrasing that you want to copy.Sit down at the piano with it and just dig in. Start plucking out notes and catching some of the phrases, you'll get it in no time. Take it slow. After you think you've got it check yourself against the sheet music, and correct your tendencies. The more pieces you learn this way, the quicker you'll be the next time you wanna learn something, you'll recognize the patterns and transpose them. And the quicker you'll be on the job when a guy hands you a recording and says 'I'm not sure what this is but can you play it for my wedding?', etc.

If what you say is absolutely true, and you indeed can play the Op. 53 Polonaise and the second Scherzo, learning this etude should not be that hard.

Piano: Could some rate these from easy to hard? I want to know which one are harder, so I can progressively play them.Fantasie Impromptu | ChopinHungarian Rhapsody No. 2 | LisztRachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concert | RachmaninoffEtude Op. 10, No. 4 | ChopinEtude Op. 10, No. 12 (Revolutionary Etude) | ChopinPaganini Etude, La Campanella | LisztThis is all I want to know, I know they are extremely hard, but I'm just curious to know.
Fantasie-ImpromptuChopin Etude op. 10 no. 12Chopin Etude Op. 10 no. 4I'm not sure about the two Liszt ones, but they are both more difficult than Chopin, but less difficult than the Rachmaninoff. I think it'sHungarian Rhapsody no. 2and then La CampanellaAnd Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano concerto is the hardest.I forgot to mention, Fantasie-Impromptu and Chopin etude are similar in difficulty. FI has continous polyrhythms and requires both hands to have a level of dexterity, but RH more. The Revolutionary Etude has a few polyrhythms, but nothing too hard. It have a lot of emphasis on LH dexterity. Also, there are a few difficult octave passages in the RH. Think of the left hand of RE as a more complex version of the FI Left hand

Etude Op. 10, No. 12 (Revolutionary Etude) | ChopinFantasie Impromptu | ChopinEtude Op. 10, No. 4 | ChopinHungarian Rhapsody No. 2 | LisztPaganini Etude, La Campanella | LisztRachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concert | Rachmaninoff

The Chopin pieces are definately the easiest; I would say that the Impromptu and the fourth etude are slightly easier than the 12th etude, but the Impromptu is probably more difficult if you haven't mastered simple polyrhythms. Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2 is the easiest of the remaining three, and I personally would rate Rachmaninoff's second much easier than La Campanella. Liszt's etudes are ridiculously hard because he knew, probably better than anyone ever, how to write idiomatically for the piano, and he took this ability to extreme lengths. Rach 2's main challenges are tone colour, balance with the orchestra, and the occasional technical passage. La Campanella is pretty much entirely composed of delicate and intricate passagework that demands utmost attention to fingering, rhythm, tone and touch (which are, yes, all separate considerations). The differences in opinion you will find surrounding the question 'which of these pieces is hardest' stem from the different depths of interpretation to which a performer takes a piece. Ten of ten concert pianists would rate La Campanella more difficult than Rach 2, but this is not immediately apparent to the amateur player (which can still indicate a very advanced player) because he doesn't have to worry about the things I mentioned above. By definition, however, Liszt's etude was destined to be more challenging than Rachmaninoff's concerto; not only because Liszt was probably a much better pianist and writer for piano, but also because a concerto must balance with the orchestra in many ways, while an etude must captivate the audience with a single performer on a single instrument. All the things that can be done by changing instrumentation or doubling in an orchestra must be achieved by quality of tone and resonance on a piano. Therefore, despite their 'surface' appearances, I would rate La Campanella significantly harder than any of Rachmaninoff's concerti, even his third.

The Grande polonaise brillante in E-flat, set for piano and orchestra, was written first, in 1830-31. In 1834, Chopin wrote an Andante spianato in G, for piano solo, which he added to the start of the piece, and joined the two parts with a fanfare-like sequence. The combined work was published in 1836 as Op. 22, and was dedicated to Madame d\'Este. The Grande polonaise brillante is a work for piano and orchestra, although the piano part is often played on its own. The Andante spianato (spianato means "even, or smooth") for solo piano was composed as an introduction to the polonaise after Chopin received a long-awaited invitation to perform in one of Habeneck\'s Conservatoire Concerts in Paris. The combined work was premiered by the composer there on April 26, 1835. This was the only time Chopin had ever used spianato as a description for any of his works. Chopin\'s first work, written at age seven, had been a polonaise. The Grande polonaise brillante of 1830--31 was to be the last such he would compose for several years. It preoccupied Chopin in his final months at Warsaw. It was finished at Vienna in 1831. Andante spianato in G major The quiet rippling effects of this introductory section are borne in a ...

Where can I find classical music to download on the internet for school? My professor suddenly decided that she would pretend we've been listening to classical music all semester, and now I have to find and listen to a set of songs, recognizing them immediately by ear.The songs are:Mozart Symphony #40 Eine Kleine Nachtmusik RequiemBeethoven 5th Symphony String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 18, No. 4 IVHaydn Trumpet Concerto in E Flat Major III Symphony No. 94 in G Major (Surprise)Those might not be accurate titles (I already corrected a few spelling mistakes that she made) but I'm pretty sure these are all pieces that are no longer copyrighted. So, does anybody know of any places I can find all of these to download and study? Is there a database of classical music for students like me? (I would rather not have to stream them)
If you're referring to sheet music/scores, sorry, can't help you. If on the other hand, you just want to listen to/perhaps "watch" performances of, then you can't beat You Tube, and it's FREE. Here's a video of Mozart's "Symphony #-40"(you can listen to all four movements, but will entail browsing and selection): youtube.com/watch?v=uXwkue2IJnM&feature=PlayList&p=0188AA36A51C3018&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=30 There are literally 1,000s of classical music videos on You Tube; here's one of a really rousing perforamce by a great conductor and orchestra: youtube.com/watch?v=U-JjNJAkBZc&feature=PlayList&p=60B8E6A73BEDBB32&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=17 Alberich

?????????????, What do you need? These are all quite different and easy to recognize even if you don't listen to classical music often.... hints: • the Hallelujah chorus will have a chorus of people singing "Hallelujah"• La donna è mobile will have (Luciano Pavarotti, no doubt) singing "La donna è mobile, Qual piuma al vento..."• The Maple Leaf Rag ... sounds like ragtime ... 99.99% it'll be on piano only.• Ferde Grofé's "On the Trail" from the Grand Canyon Suite ... really sounds western ... complete with the donkey brays.• The Haydn Trumpet concerto will have the trumpet ... at least if they get you about a minute into the thing.... well there's fifty percent of your quiz. I'm sure you'll figure the rest are just as easy.

Your ten favourite film scores? I know, I am stretching the boundaries of what constitutes 'classical music', but where else could I ask this question? In the latest edition of one of the professional music magazines here in the UK is a list of what one person considers his ten favourite film scores. Three of them are not actually original scores at all, but use music by classical composers. Two of these are film versions of operas and so I think should not have been included (it being a different genre of film-making, surely). My question: what are your favourite film scores (whether by accepted 'classical' composers or not)? The ten from the magazine (not necessarily in order of preference as far as I can tell):King Kong (1933) - Max SteinerPsycho (1960) - Bernard HerrmannBatman (1989) - Danny ElfmanThe Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) - Ennio MorriconeOn the Waterfront (1954) - Leonard BernsteinThe Shawshank Redemption (1994) - Thomas Newman (with a tiny bit of help from WA Mozart)Brief Encounter (1945) - Sergei RakhmaninovA Clockwork Orange (1971) - Various (see below)The Magic Flute (1975 Ingmar Bergman film) - WA MozartCarmen (1984 Francesco Rossi film) - Georges BizetA Clockwork Orange:The Funeral of Queen Mary - Henry Purcell/Walter (now Wendy) CarlosThe Thieving Magpie - RossiniTheme from A Clockwork Orange (Beethoviana) - Walter (now Wendy) CarlosSymphony No 9 (Scherzo and Finale) - Beethoven (with some arrangements by Walter (now Wendy) Carlos and Rachel Elkind)William Tell Overture - Rossini/Walter (now Wendy) CarlosPomp and Circumstance Marches Nos 1 and 4 - ElgarTimesteps - Walter (now Wendy) CarlosOverture to the Sun - Terry TuckerI Want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper" - Erika Eigen Singin' in the Rain - Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, sung by Gene KellyLet's hope this question doesn't get deleted like my last one for not being 'question'-y enough!Nick:Do you mean the original 1998 Japanese film 'Ring' with music by Kenji Kanawa, or the rather poor Hollywood remake with Hans Zimmer's music?i.jones:Not my choices, but those of the author in the music magazine I refer to. Haven't had time to think-up mine yet!
Pan's LabyrinthHeroCrouching Tiger, Hidden DragonCorpse BrideEdward ScissorhandsThe Harry Potter seriesThe Ring (Both versions)Memoirs of a GeishaPsychoThe Godfather

I didn't think of it my own, but I agree with you about Clockwork Orange(Thanks to you, I'll have "I want to marry a lighthouse keeperAnd keep him companyI want to marry a lighthouse keeperAnd live by the side of the seaI'll polish his lamps by the light of daySo ships at night can find their wayI want to marry a lighthouse keeperWon't that be okay?"stuck in my head all day.)... and a shout-out to Raiders of the Lost Ark -- home of my namesake.==Edit, I'll add me another fewThe Mission (though a bit tediously long) -- E. MorriconeThe Abominable Dr. Phibes -- Basil Kirchin and others including: "War March of the Priests" (Mendelssohn), "Darktown Strutters' Ball" (Shelton Brooks) and "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)" (Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen)

My favorite film score by a quote--classical--unquote composer is Alexander Nevsky by Prokofieff.Second would probably be The Red Pony by Aaron Copland.I'm surprised that the list included The Good, The Bad, and They Ugly by Ennio Morricone but not the other two great spaghetti Westerns.I agree with Nick that the Harry Potter music is nice. As I have indicated in reply to earlier questions, John Williams borrows ideas from earlier composers, but he does so with good effect. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is nice. The theme song is ingenious in that the intervals are complex until the last phrase, where the intervals are more simple. It is more common for the last phrase to be more complex in some way.How about the famous guitar solo in Les Jeux Interdits (Forbidden Games).Tchaikovsky often gets praised for the second movement of his Fourth Symphony, in which he writes a lovely melody on straight eighth notes. The same can be said for this melody, which is straight quarter notes in 3/4 time.

Top of my list:Lifeboat - Directed by Hitchcock - film score by Hugo FriedhoferThe use of music in this film epitomizes the restraint I think most directors need in their use of film music. Film music should enhance and aid in telling the story, but not be a crutch to save a poorly written or acted momentSolaris - (1972) directed by Tarkovsky - Original Music by Eduard ArtemievAlso fantastic use of Bach throughout. You could understand the film from only the images and the music without any of the dialog.Pi - Directed by Darren Aaronofsky - film score by Clint MansellI must say I preferred his style on this film to what he would do later on. The selectivity of when he used sound made its effect that much more powerful when it came in.Eraserhead - directed by David Lynch - Soundtrack by David Lynch and Alan SpletMullholland Drive - directed by David Lynch - Score by Angelo Badalamenti On the Waterfront - Score by Lenny BernsteinBrother from another planet - score by Martin Brody and Mason Daring. This ones definitely not classical and there are a few 80s pop songs that have fallen out of style, but otherwise a very enjoyable experience.Un Chien Andalou - Music by Luis Buñue and a bit of Wagner spliced in there.

To kill a Mockingbird- Elmer BernsteinQuigley Down Under-Basil PoledourisMagnificent Seven-Elmer BernsteinZulu- John BarryDr. Zhivago- Maurice JarreRed Pony- ProkofievSunday in New York-Peter NeroHelp-BeatlesThe Man with the Golden Arm-Elmer BernsteinAnything by Aaron Copland

The Lord of the Rings theme tuneThe Eternal Vow from Crouching Tiger, Hidden DragonThe main theme from Schindler's ListThe Magic FluteI'm not sure what else but those are definitely my top 4 in order from the favourite downwards.

1. Amadeus2. Amadeus3. Amadeus4. Amadeus5. Amadeus6. Amadeus7. Amadeus8. Amadeus9. Amadeus10. AmadeusOther than that, I like Jerry Goldsmith's score for the 1992 movie "Rudy", and Dario Marienelli's score for the Keira Knightley version of "Pride and Prejudice".

This was somewhat difficult.. I could agree with Psycho, On the Waterfront and of course A Clockwork Orange but I would substitute the latter forThe Shining (1980) of course not really a score as such, Tarantino works the same wonders of arrangement with Pulp Fiction (1994) obviously not classical in the least mind but definitely a favourite.I don't know what the rules be ?City Lights (1931) magical, I'm a big Chaplin fan ( :Morricone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984) andBernard Hermann's score to Taxi Driver (1976) are probably my two favourite scores. The Thin Red Line (1998),Schindler's List (1993),Mulholland Drive (2001),Alien (1979).I really can't decide on a 10th.

Good question, Del - it's a challenge to come up with some films no-one else has thought of yet. But a brain-stretching exercise is grand way to start the day!My first instinct is to list some of my favourite "composer" films such as "Farinelli," "Tous les Matins du Monde" and "Le Roi Danse" - but instead, I've got a few Australian films that incorporate some classical music in their soundtracks:1. "Travelling North" (Vivaldi's e minor bassoon concerto recurs throughout this film.)2. "Last Days of Chez Nous" (Bach harpsichord concerto)3. "Shine" (the story of autistic pianist David Helfgott)4. "Passion" (the story of Percy Grainger, focusing primarily on his somewhat unorthodox sexuality)5. "Gross Misconduct" (arias from Puccini's operas)6. And there's a disturbing New Zealand film "Heavenly Creatures" which incorporates some of Mario Lanza's original operatic recordings.7. Talking of Puccini, how can we forget Glenn Close slitting her wrists to "Madama Butterfly" in "Fatal Attraction?" I'll add more as I think of them.Hafwen x

Of those not mentioned here, I want to include one I love listening to: the score from Somewhere in Time composed by John Barry. In particular, the theme from the movie performed by Roger Williams -- such a beautiful piece -- the eighteenth variation of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini : youtube.com/watch?v=rf8C_fkEXqQ~

Okay, I'll bite. I like movies too. My favorite film scores (no particular order)--or at least ones that seem to be iconic and memorableThe Magnificent Seven--Elmer Bernstein (also his theme for The Great Escape)Bridge on the River Kwai--Malcolm Arnold (who adapted "Colonel Bogey March" by F.J. Ricketts (under Kenneth Alford)Lawrence of Arabia--Maurice JarrePsycho-Bernard HermannThe Mission--Ennio MorriconeThe Godfather--Nino Rota (who also scored Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet) Goldfinger--James Barry--who gets a special "shoutout" for all his other James Bond themesBreakfast at Tiffany's--Henry ManciniThe Pink Panther--Henry ManciniStar Wars--John WilliamsI realized I really kind of have about 12 there, but I could have listed even more memorable themes that have entered pop culture. A special honorable mention should go to "2001: A Space Odyssey" for its use of Richard Strauss's "And Thus Spoke Zarathustra" (Also Sprach Zarathustra)youtube.com/watch?v=cWnmCu3U09w&feature=related

PHOTOS OF POLAND FREDERIC CHOPIN:Concerto No.1 Op.11(1830) KRYSTIAN ZIMERMAN,piano Legendary LIVE Amsterdam 11-3-1979 II:Romance The Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11 by the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin was composed in 1830. It was first performed on 11 October of that year, in Warsaw, with the composer as soloist, during one of his "farewell" concerts before leaving Poland. It was the first of Chopin\'s two piano concertos to be published, and was therefore given the designation of Piano Concerto "No. 1" at the time of publication, even though it was actually written immediately after what was later published as Piano Concerto No. 2. It is dedicated to Friedrich Kalkbrenner. The concerto is scored for solo piano, a pair of flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons, 4 horn, 2 trumpets, tenor trombone, timpani and strings. It contains the three movements typical of instrumental concertos of the period: 1. Allegro maestoso 2. Romance - Larghetto 3. Rondo - Vivace Classical critics usually fall into one of two schools of thought concerning the piece. The first of these says that given that Chopin was a composer for the piano first and foremost; the orchestral part of this piece acts more as a vehicle for the pianist, with the individual instrumental parts being uninteresting to perform. The second suggests that the orchestral backing is carefully and deliberately written to fit in with the sound of the piano, and that the simplicity of arrangement is in deliberate ...
